Tomita Brewery

冨田酒造

Introduction

The brewery of “Shichihonyari", founded in the Tenbun era (over 460 years ago), is one of the oldest sake breweries in Japan. Located at the northernmost tip of Lake Biwa, the brewery is dedicated to crafting local sake made with Shiga rice varieties such as Tamaei, Ginbukietsu, and Watabune.

Story

Founded in the Tenbun era, Tomita Brewery is one of the oldest sake breweries in Japan with a history of over 460 years ago. The Shiga-based brewery is located along the Hokkoku Highway at the northernmost tip of Lake Biwa, at the foot of Mt. Shizugatake. The brewery is led by the 15th-generation brewmaster, a handsome man resembling the famous Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano.

Their sake is characterized by a robust flavor reminiscent of the wild warriors of the Warring States period, and it is rare to find a brewery that can bring out the flavor of the rice so beautifully. The brewery still uses a warehouse built in the Edo period (1603-1868). It is a brewery that does not only want to pass down sake but also to preserve the environment that surrounds it as much as possible. Since 2001, they have been working with local farmers to cultivate Shiga rice varieties such as Tamaei, Ginbukietsu, and Watabune, as well as actively trying to cultivate pesticide-free and low-pesticide rice.
